Yes & no DOC Ranger (Summer Learning Journey)

Would you like to be a DOC ranger and live with the animals on Great Barrier Island?

Pros: The scenery, discovering new breeds & helping the environment.
The scenery would be stupendous because of all the beautiful New Zealand trees and bushes and looking out onto the amazing landscape. Discovering new breeds would be really spectacular to do because then you would be the first one to see the new breed. Helping the environment would be great because you would feel like you are helping the world just by doing one thing and that would feel really good.

Cons: Having to wake up really early to check that everything is fine, having the feeling that you are being watched in your sleep & you are all alone on the island.
Having to wake up really early to check that everything is fine would be really annoying because you would be really tired all the time. Having the feeling that you are being watched in your sleep would be so creepy and horrible. Being alone on an Island with a bunch of little creepy lizards would be the worst

How would you feel about living on the island?

Write your comment below of how you would feel

I definitely wouldn't feel all that great about it but I would still like it (in some ways).

  1. Hi Jack, I really liked how you have used all your own words in this blog and you've included some interesting adjectives! Your pros and cons were thoughtful. I think you mean species instead of breeds though - breeds are really only created by humans when they choose what animals get to have offspring, but species are made naturally in their wild environment depending on who survives! Overall, would you enjoy being a doc ranger or is it not for you?

  2. Kia ora Jack,

Well done on completing the secretive skink activity! I am very impressed that you didn't just simply list 3 pros and 3 cons. Your descriptive words used helped me to really imagine what being a DOC Ranger would feel like. You had some great pros and cons, I'd be interested to know which would outweighed the other. Do you think you'd ever like to be a DOC Ranger?

I used to camp on Urupukapuka Island with friends and absolutely loved it out there, however, when it rained it was dreadful and complicated. It was hard to do anything when if you stepped out of your tent you'd be drenched, or even sometimes the tents would leak or break. So I think living on an island would have its ups and downs. Have you been to Urupukapuka before? I know it's not too far from Paihia.

Keep up the great work Jack!
